The Mahamana Library Science Alumni Association is the registered body of LIS Alumni of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi created to establish a chain of relations of different generation’s alumnus of BHU who are serving or served in different parts of India and abroad. It is a matter of great pride to all of us to be associated with Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi as a student of Library and Information Science. The Department of Library & Information Science, BHU has shaped our destiny and is alma mater for all of us being a student of Library & Information Science. Being a student of BHU gives a different kind of feelings. This Association is registered under Society Registration Act of India ( Registration No. VAR/02726/2023-24).

During 1980’s, BHU Library Science Association (BHULISA) existed as a LIS student body to organise professional and co-curricular activities in the Department of Library and Information Science, BHU. It was a formal student body of enrolled/admitted students in an academic session. The election was valid for an academic session in the Department. After 2005, a group of pass out students decided to form an Alumni association to provide a platform for the alumni to interact, discuss and exchange their thoughts & views on professional issues. The larger objective was to link and bring together large number of alumni who are otherwise scattered throughout the country unknown to each other. Thus, the formal BHU LIS Alumni Association was formed. The details of alumni were collected including their contact number, e-mails etc. Thus, a database of alumni was created and widely shared. This received considerable appreciation. A website of the Association was also developed along with a   WhatsApp group. Now the LIS alumni could freely interact and exchange information within the group.

The first Alumni meet of the Department was organised in Banaras Hindu University in 2017. With the valuable inputs from esteemed alumni the activities of the Association were further expanded. The second Alumni meet of the Department was organised in Banaras Hindu University in 2023. In the general body meeting of the Association, it was felt that the activities of the Association cannot be sustained and strengthened without financial support. Thus, it was decided in the said meeting to get the Association registered under the Society Registration Act. A team of alumni members drafted the constitution of the Association and formally submitted for registration. Finally, in July 2023, we succeeded in getting the Alumni Association registered as “ Mahamana Library Science Alumni Association”. With the registration, a bank account of the Association was opened with State Bank of India, BHU.

The main mission of the Association is to provide a platform for communication with the objective to work for the welfare, development and progress of the alumni.  Now the Association is focusing on membership drive not only to associate more alumni but also to generate more funds which is de-facto essential to run the activities of the body. The membership drive is online as well as offline. Apart from membership fee, one can also give donation to the Association.

We solicit the cooperation of valuable esteemed alumni of the Department of Library & Information Science, Banaras Hindu University to come forward and strengthen the Mahamana Library Science Alumni Association through membership and generous donations.

We make an appeal to the worthy Alumni of Library and Information Science, BHU to participate in the mission and fulfil the dreams of Mahamana of serving the people with knowledge.
